Pool finish and tile get chosen for color first, understandably, but there's more to the decision than what looks best in a rendering.

Plaster, Pebble, or Quartz

Standard plaster is the most affordable option but shows wear sooner. Pebble and quartz finishes cost more upfront but hold their color and texture longer, which matters if you're planning to enjoy the pool for years, not just a season.

Tile Does More Than Decorate the Waterline

Waterline tile protects the plaster edge from scale buildup and sun damage, so it's a functional choice as much as a design one. Glass and porcelain tile hold color better in direct sun than some ceramic options.

Southern California Sun Changes the Math

Darker finishes absorb more heat, which can mean a warmer pool without running the heater as often, but they can also show mineral buildup more visibly than lighter finishes. It's a real tradeoff worth talking through before you commit.

We walk every client through these choices during design, not after the pool's already been dug.
